Bodegas Vega Sicilia Único Ribera del Duero 2015 750ml

Vega Sicilia is widely regarded as the greatest wine estate in Spain, founded in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves who first introduced Bordeaux varieties to Ribera del Duero alongside native Tinto Fino (Tempranillo). Owned by the Álvarez family since 1982, the estate covers around 1,000 hectares with 210 hectares under vine, and its flagship Único is drawn from 40 hectares of older vines. The 2015 is the first vintage produced entirely by winemaker Gonzalo Iturriaga.

A blend of 96% Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) and 4% Cabernet Sauvignon from vines averaging 40-plus years of age. Expect a profound, classical Vega Sicilia nose of dark cherry, pomegranate, spice, cigar box and fine-grained cedar. The palate is full-bodied and concentrated, with silky tannins, bright acidity and the signature rustic elegance of great Ribera del Duero. 14.5% alcohol.

One of the longest ageing regimes in the world: approximately 10 years in total between oak and bottle. The wine spent around five years in oak — roughly 18 months in 225L French and American oak barrels followed by three and a half years in large 22,000L oak vats — before a further period in bottle.
