Benjamin Leroux is one of the most respected figures of his generation in Burgundy. Born and raised in Beaune, he entered the Lycee Viticole there at fifteen and was running Domaine du Comte Armand in Pommard as regisseur by the age of twenty four. In 2007 he set up his own small merchant house in Beaune, working across some fifty appellations from Chassagne-Montrachet up to Gevrey-Chambertin.
Les Mitans sits mid slope in Volnay among the village's best premier crus, and in Leroux's hands it leans a shade earthier and more structured than his village wine. The nose is reticent at first but well defined, opening onto crunchy red fruit, mulberry, raspberry and marmalade with a lick of five spice. The palate is medium bodied and precise, tannins fine and savoury, the finish clean and persistent.
Leroux treats every wine differently according to what the season hands him, which is a large part of why his range reads so consistently well across such a spread of appellations. Give this a little air and serve it with duck, veal, game birds or a mushroom risotto.
