Apsley Gorge is a small Tasmanian vineyard tucked away on the state's east coast near Bicheno, several kilometres inland from the sea at the entrance to Apsley Gorge National Park. Founder Brian Franklin planted the site to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with a clear Burgundian bent, drawn by the unique inland microclimate that delivers fully ripe fruit while preserving cool-climate freshness.
The Chardonnay component is small, with around a hectare of vines tended by hand and vinified in a deliberately old-school Burgundian manner. Whole-bunch pressing, indigenous-yeast fermentation in seasoned barrel and extended lees ageing produce a wine of texture and depth, with very little new oak overshadowing the fruit core.
The 2025 opens with classic Apsley Gorge aromas of ripe yellow peach, nectarine, honeycomb and lemon curd, lifted by roasted almond, butterscotch and a hint of spicy nougat. The palate is rich, bright and intense, with fine acidity, layered texture and a long, mealy finish. Drinking beautifully young, with the structure to age gracefully for five to ten years if cellared with care.
