Defining the Gin Category
Gin is defined by its prominent juniper berry flavour, which imparts a distinctive pine-like and resinous character. This sets gin apart from other spirits. The category’s wide range of flavours comes from the varied botanicals used, such as coriander, angelica root, and citrus peels, creating a dynamic and ever-evolving spirit.
How Gin is Made
The production of gin is a delicate process that balances creativity with precision:
- Base Spirit: A neutral grain spirit forms the foundation.
- Botanicals: Juniper berries are essential, complemented by a mix of spices, herbs, and fruits.
- Infusion Methods: Botanicals are either steeped in the base spirit or placed in a basket for vapour infusion during distillation.
- Distillation: The mixture undergoes distillation in copper pot stills, capturing the essential oils and flavours.
- Dilution and Bottling: The distilled spirit is diluted to the desired strength and then bottled.
Different Types of Gin
- London Dry Gin: Known for its crisp, dry profile with a dominant juniper presence. Brands like Tanqueray and Beefeater exemplify this style.
- Old Tom Gin: Slightly sweeter with a smoother profile, popular in vintage cocktails like the Tom Collins.
- Navy Strength Gin: Robust with an ABV around 57%, historically associated with British naval officers.
- Plymouth Gin: Sweeter and earthier, produced only in Plymouth, England.
- New Western Dry Gin: Modern style focusing on botanicals other than juniper, such as citrus or floral notes. Example: Hendrick’s.
- Craft Gins: Small-batch distilleries using local botanicals, celebrated for their artistry.
- Sloe Gin: Fruit-infused, sweet liqueur made by steeping sloe berries in gin.
Regions of Production
Gin has its roots in Europe, with England being the historical heartland of gin production, especially for London Dry Gin. In recent years, Australia has emerged as a dynamic player, particularly in cities like Sydney and Melbourne, where gins often feature native botanicals. The diverse climates and rich biodiversity of Australia contribute to the unique flavour profiles of Australian gins.
