What Is Craft Beer?
Craft beer refers to beer brewed in small batches, often by independent breweries that focus on quality, innovation, and unique flavour profiles. Unlike mass-produced beer, craft beer is all about experimentation and pushing the boundaries of traditional brewing methods.
Craft brewers use a wide variety of ingredients—from different types of malt and hops to unique additions like fruit, spices, and even coffee. This results in a diverse range of beers that vary in flavour, aroma, and mouthfeel. The world of craft beer is incredibly versatile, offering everything from bold and bitter IPAs to smooth and chocolatey stouts, with endless possibilities in between.
How Craft Beer is Made
Craft beer is made using traditional brewing techniques, but with a modern twist. The process starts with milling the grains and mixing them with hot water to create a mash. This releases sugars from the grains, which are then fermented by yeast to produce alcohol and carbon dioxide.
The type of ingredients used, including different types of malt and hops, greatly influences the final product. Craft brewers also often add unique ingredients during the brewing process or after fermentation to enhance the flavours and aromas of their beers.
Types of Craft Beer at Barrel & Batch
At Barrel & Batch, we’ve handpicked a selection of craft beers to suit every taste and occasion:
IPA (India Pale Ale)
One of the most popular craft beer styles, IPAs are known for their bold hop flavours and aromas, often with notes of citrus, pine, or tropical fruit. Some standout IPAs in our collection include Stone & Wood Pacific Ale and Mountain Culture Beer Co x Cloudwater Cloudy IPA.
Pale Ale
Pale ales are generally more balanced than IPAs, with a moderate hop bitterness and malty sweetness. If you’re looking for a well-rounded craft beer, try Young Henrys Newtowner Pale Ale or Kaiju Krush Tropical Pale Ale.
Stout
Rich, dark, and full of flavour, stouts are perfect for those who enjoy a robust beer. Look for notes of coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt in options like Mountain Culture Moon Dust Stout and Founders Breakfast Stout.
Sour Beer
Sour beers offer a tangy, tart experience that’s both refreshing and complex. These beers often feature fruit flavours and are great for hot days or as a palate cleanser. Try Two Metre Tall Cleansing Ale or Moo Brew Dark Ale for a unique experience.
Lager
Lagers are crisp, clean, and easy to drink, making them perfect for any occasion. For a great example of a craft lager, check out Balter Lager or Furphy Refreshing Ale.

Seasonal Craft Beer Recommendations
Craft beer is highly seasonal, with breweries often releasing limited-edition beers to celebrate the different flavours and occasions that each season brings:
Summer
Summer calls for light, refreshing beers with fruity and citrus flavours. Try Stone & Wood Pacific Ale or Kaiju Krush Tropical Pale Ale for a perfect summertime brew.
Autumn
As the weather cools, opt for beers with more malt character. Young Henrys Newtowner Pale Ale and Mountain Culture Moon Dust Stout are great choices for autumn.
Winter
In winter, stouts and porters come into their own. For a warming, rich beer, try Founders Breakfast Stout or Moo Brew Dark Ale.
Spring
Spring is the season of renewal, and fresh, crisp beers are perfect. Try a Furphy Refreshing Ale or Balter Lager to celebrate the season.

Food Pairings for Craft Beer
Craft beer’s wide range of flavours makes it incredibly versatile when paired with food. Here are some pairing suggestions to enhance your craft beer experience:
- IPA: Pairs well with spicy dishes like tacos or Indian curries, as the hops help to cut through the heat.
- Pale Ale: Great with grilled meats, burgers, and pizza. The balance of hops and malt complements savoury dishes.
- Stout: Perfect with rich desserts like chocolate cake or even barbecued meats, as the roasted malt flavours complement the sweetness.
- Sour Beer: Ideal with seafood, salads, and light cheeses, as the tartness cuts through the richness of the food.
- Lager: Pairs well with light dishes like chicken, salads, or sushi, as the crispness of the lager refreshes the palate.
