Moss Wood is one of Margaret River's founding estates, established in 1969 by Bill and Sandra Pannell in the Wilyabrup sub-region. Since 1984 the property has been owned by Clare and Keith Mugford, with Keith tending the vineyard and making the wine since 1979. Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon holds an Exceptional rating in Langton's Classification of Australian Wine, placing it among a small handful of Australia's most collectible cabernets.
The 2023 Cabernet is grown on Wilyabrup's distinctive gravelly loam over clay and typically includes a small component of Cabernet Franc and Merlot. It shows a deep crimson colour with intense aromas of blackcurrant, espresso and roasted chestnut layered with hints of black olive and spice. The palate is generously concentrated with cassis, black cherry and mocha flavours, classical fine-grained tannins and a claret-like, cedary finish that carries a pure black currant plume.
Hand-picked fruit is given extended skin contact during fermentation for greater complexity and finesse, followed by maturation in French oak. The wine has a long track record of ageing gracefully for decades.
