Nigori means "cloudy", and this style of sake is roughly filtered through a coarse mesh that allows fine rice solids to remain suspended in the liquid. The result is a soft, milky-textured sake with a slightly sweet, creamy character that sets it apart from clearer styles. Gekkeikan has been brewing in the Fushimi district of Kyoto since 1637, drawing on the soft, mineral-rich spring water that has long defined the region's reputation for refined sake.
This is a Junmai-shu, made in the traditional way using only rice, water, koji and yeast, with no distilled alcohol added. The rough filtration retains a fine sediment of rice that gives the bottle its hallmark cloudy appearance. A gentle swirl before pouring will redistribute the lees and unlock the full creamy texture.
The nose is sweet and inviting, with notes of steamed rice, fresh cream, banana and ripe melon. The palate is thick and silky, with flavours of overripe banana, almond milk, cantaloupe and a touch of honey, balanced by bright, tangy acidity. The finish is long and gently sweet. Serve well chilled, and pair with spicy Korean, Thai or Mexican dishes, or as a soft contrast to vanilla ice cream.
