Domaine Auguste Clape is the historic benchmark of Cornas, a tiny granite-soil appellation in the Northern Rhône that gave its name to the inky, structured style of Syrah grown along its steep terraces. Auguste Clape was the first vigneron to bottle his own Cornas, and the estate, now run by his grandson Olivier, has stayed true to a traditional, low-intervention approach across more than half a century.
Fruit is hand-harvested from a patchwork of old-vine parcels across the appellation, fermented with native yeasts and whole-bunch inclusion before maturation in large, well-seasoned oak foudres. The result is a Cornas of remarkable depth and longevity, with little of the new-oak gloss seen at other estates in the appellation.
The wine shows aromas of dark plum, blackberry, violet, black olive, peppered meat and crushed stone. The palate is full bodied with serious grip, layered with savoury herbs, salty minerality and dark fruit, finishing long and brooding. Built to age for decades, it is the unmistakable voice of Cornas in its most classical form.
