The pair bought the dilapidated 6.5-hectare vineyard in 2010 after vintages in the Languedoc, Oregon, Margaret River and New Zealand, rehabilitating the site into one of Tasmania's most exciting addresses. They are also the winemakers behind Home Hill's Jimmy Watson-winning Kelly's Reserve Pinot Noir.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe vineyard sits on a north-east facing slope sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly, with free-draining quartz-inflected mudstone over clay. Chardonnay covers 2 hectares planted to Dijon clones 277, 76, 95 and 96. All vineyard work is done with an organic outlook.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe 2024 Chardonnay is the product of a low-yielding, warm and dry year, with yields at around 2.5 tonnes per hectare. Whole-bunch pressed with wild ferment, no malolactic fermentation, 12 months in older oak (around 20% new) and 3 months in tank before bottling. It shows custard apple, white stone fruit, a savoury lift with a parmesan-rind note, and a chalky rather than saline texture on the palate, making it one of the more generous Sailor Seeks Horse Chardonnays on release.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eVintages may vary.
