The first wines were made from purchased fruit in the Stags Leap District, produced partly at Shafer Vineyards and partly in Koerner's own garage, before the family built their winery in the St Helena hills in 1982.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is Napa Cabernet in the generous, welcoming style the estate has always favoured. Blackcurrant, black cherry and plum lead, with cedar, vanilla, mocha and a hint of dried herb from time in French oak. The palate is full and round, tannins ripe and supple, and the finish long and warming rather than austere.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is a nice footnote to the family name: Koerner's great aunt Irma Rombauer wrote The Joy of Cooking, and the family's German ancestors were winegrowers in the Rheingau.
