It is one of four single vineyard Chardonnays made by Kumeu River at Kumeu, north west of Auckland, and it has become a favourite among those who like their Chardonnay tightly wound and mineral driven.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe site was first planted in 1982 and replanted in 2001. Its soils are heavy clay over sandstone with a band of iron pan sitting roughly thirty centimetres below the surface, and that geology is generally credited with the salty, stony line that runs through the wine. The fruit is whole bunch pressed and wild fermented in French oak, then matured on lees with full malolactic fermentation.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ePrecise and citrus led, the wine shows lemon zest, grapefruit and yellow peach against a flinty, gently reductive edge. The palate is taut and steely, with hazelnut and toast building underneath and a long, saline finish.
