The Brajkovich family have been growing grapes at Kumeu, just north west of Auckland, since 1944, and the Estate Chardonnay is the wine that introduces their house style. It draws on fruit from the family's home vineyards on the clay loam soils of the district.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eEverything here is done in the Burgundian manner. The fruit is whole bunch pressed, fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques, then left on lees with full malolactic fermentation. The result is a Chardonnay of real texture, where the oak sits underneath the fruit rather than on top of it.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe wine is bright and pristine, with lemon, white peach and juicy pear at the core, a touch of smoky spice and a glossy, silky palate that keeps its energy right through to the finish. Drinking beautifully now, though there is plenty of concentration here for those who want to hold a few bottles back.
