The site is wedged between the original Upper Tintara vineyard, planted by Dr Alexander Kelly in 1862, and the historic Hope Farm\/Seaview vineyard, with the oldest Koomilya vines planted over 100 years ago. Stephen and Fiona Pannell purchased the property in 2012 after Steve had worked with the fruit for years as chief red winemaker at Hardys; the first single-block release followed in 2016.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe site is defined by an unusual soil profile of dark grey, thinly laminated slaty siltstone flecked with ironstone, surrounded by native forest that helps moderate the climate. The vineyard is also the focus of an extensive regeneration program, with native plantings restoring the surrounding creekline and bushland.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe JC Block, named for previous owner Jill Cant, faces south-west at around 120 metres on iron-rich, slaty siltstone soils. From 49-year-old vines, the 2021 shows the block's signature aromatic split of red fruit and mahogany: dark cherries, red liquorice, black pepper, blackcurrant pastille and an unmistakable iodine, ironstone undertone, with fine, long tannins and a fresh plum-stone finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe winemaking is deliberately straightforward to let the site speak: hand-harvested, native yeast fermentation, time on skins, then maturation in large-format, seasoned French oak vats with no new oak.
