Sitting at around 380 metres in the Gladysdale sub region of the Upper Yarra, it was planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir by viticulturist Ray Guerin in the 1980s. The slopes are punishingly steep, which is where the name comes from, and the red volcanic loam gives the fruit a distinctive savoury lift.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGiant Steps acquired the site in 2022 and moved quickly to bring it into the single vineyard range, where it now sits among the winery's most compelling Pinot Noirs.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe wine is fragrant and finely drawn, with dark cherry, raspberry and red plum meeting forest floor, dried herbs and a touch of exotic spice. The palate is medium bodied and beautifully structured, with fine chalky tannins, bright natural acidity and real length. High altitude Pinot Noir with poise and drive, well worth cellaring.
