Set in the Gladysdale sub region of the Upper Yarra at around 380 metres of elevation, the vineyard was planted to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir by viticulturist Ray Guerin back in the 1980s. Its steep slopes and red volcanic loam soils give the site a character all of its own, and the name comes from just how difficult it is to work.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eGiant Steps took on the vineyard in 2022 and released the first wines from the site soon after, adding it to a single vineyard range that has become a reference point for cool climate Australian Chardonnay.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe wine is taut and linear, with grapefruit, white peach and lemon pith carried by a fine line of acidity. Time in French oak adds a subtle nutty, flinty edge without covering the fruit, and the finish is long, chalky and savoury.
