The family bought into the Clos du Roy in 1971, and this small, historic Mercurey site, once held by the kings of France, has since become one of the appellation's most respected premier crus.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe parcels face south-southwest on compact, cool white marl and clay-limestone, planted in 1971 and 1982 and worked organically. Fifteen months in French oak, around a third of it new, frames a nose of cassis, cherry and ripe raspberry threaded with smoke, liquorice and light toast. The palate is satiny but seriously built, with fine, enveloping tannins and firm minerality carrying a long finish.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a Mercurey with the structure to reward patience.
