Its terroir was recognised centuries ago, and the wine was written about by John Locke and Thomas Jefferson long before the modern classifications existed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vineyard covers around 51 hectares, roughly 48 of them planted to red varieties. Deep beds of quartz gravel, in places more than three metres thick, lie over clay, sand and limestone and drain freely. Merlot plays a larger role here than at the Médoc First Growths, working alongside Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and a small white block of Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Gris.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHaut-Brion is the most distinctive of the First Growths: smoky and earthy, with warm red and black fruits, tobacco, graphite and the savoury note often likened to warm bricks or embers.
