The estate has been owned by the Maroteaux family since 1988, and its gravity fed cellar, built in the early 1990s, was one of the first of its kind in the Médoc.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAround 60 hectares of vines are spread over gravel croupes across the appellation. Cabernet Sauvignon makes up roughly 70 per cent of the blend, with Merlot and small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, and the wine is matured for at least eighteen months in French oak with about 60 per cent new barrels.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBranaire-Ducru is prized for purity and balance rather than weight. Cassis and dark cherry come with cedar, violets, fine spice and a signature note of dark chocolate, over elegant, finely grained tannins.
