Produced by Marchesi Antinori from the Tignanello vineyard on their Tenuta Tignanello estate in the heart of Chianti Classico, it was first made in 1971 and became one of the first Sangiovese wines to be aged in small oak barriques and among the first Tuscan reds to be blended with non-traditional varieties such as Cabernet. In doing so it helped define the category that became known as the Super Tuscans.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vineyard lies at around 350 to 400 metres above sea level on rocky, calcareous soils with a south-westerly aspect. The wine is built on Sangiovese, complemented by smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Each parcel and variety is fermented separately in conical tanks, malolactic fermentation takes place in small oak barrels, and the wine is then matured for just over a year, mostly in French barriques with a small share of Hungarian oak, before a further period of bottle ageing prior to release.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe 2022 growing season was warm and dry through spring and summer, with rain in August bringing welcome relief and wider swings between day and night temperatures. Harvest began in mid-September with the Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc, with the Cabernet Sauvignon picked last in early October. Tignanello typically shows ripe red and black cherry, plum and spice, framed by fine, firm tannins and fresh acidity, with the structure to age gracefully for many years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eVintages may vary.
