Within this large Cru are several delimited parcels (historical plots, if you like). Rocca’s Vigna Loreto is one of the most revered: a tiny plot that is a monopole. Vines here are around 55 years old, and Rocca first vinified the parcel as a separate bottling in 1990. Sitting on the sunnier, south-west side of the ridge, the nearby Tanaro River provides moderating influence. This results in cooler nights than the ridge’s other side. The clay and limestone soils are also sandier and lighter than in the rest of Ovello, giving the wines here far more finesse. Equally significant, vines from Loreto must be cropped at 10 hl/ha less than other Ovello vines if the wine is bottled under the parcel name, so this wine balances its finesse with real depth. So, this is deeper, for sure, yet still with Rocca’s trademark elegance and finesse, and a slick of powdery tannins that bring super freshness. Again, superb.

The 2022 Barbaresco Ovello Vigna Loreto is powerful and ample, yet also quite translucent. Meruzzano is a very diverse, cool place, with lots of forest, perfect for warmer vintages. These excellent sources, and the meticulous winemaking—three weeks on skins and maturation exclusively in large, low-impact oak botti for 20 months—consistently results in a benchmark wine for this level.

This is a lovely, delicate style, even though it’s coming from a dry, warm vintage. Only 400 mm of rain (about half the norm) fell in 2022, and there was a very long, warm summer; the vintage was completed by September 29, so early for the region. It’s a year that we can compare with 2017 in terms of the weather, yet the wines here are completely different. This is very perfumed, pretty, floral, and must be tasted (and drunk!). The notes below sum it up well.

A floral style, showing roses and violets at the forefront as well as pomegranate and a slightly peppery character. Mature vines in Barbaresco and San Rocco Seno d’Elvio, southeast of Alba, have always been part of the mix. New parcels in Nieve and Treiso now make this Dolcetto a more complete picture of the Barbaresco region. The Barbaresco vines were planted in 1960 and 1978. Thanks to their maturity and sensible yields, this wine typically displays more intensity and texture than many a garden-variety Dolcetto d’Alba. Of course, coming from the cooler, later, more humid 2024 vintage (harvest finished October 14th), this is a brighter, more delicate example, but it’s still a cracker. Angelo Rocca planted the south-facing vines in 1998 on very poor clay and limestone slopes with thin layers of sandstone. The sandstone brings finesse, as does the altitude. Daniela Rocca highlights that this soil type (locally called Formazione di Lequio) resembles Barolo’s Monforte and parts of Serralunga. It extends almost six hectares (three of which are Nebbiolo) and comprises roughly a third of the total Cru area. Rocca’s Nebbiolo vines are between 50 and 75 years old, offering an ideal combination of vine age, southeast exposure and deep clay-limestone soils. Angelo, an homage to the father of Daniela, Paola and Monica (his three daughters who today run the estate) is a small blend of fruit from selected parcels across the Estate. But it’s also a celebration of Angelo’s father, Albino, founder of the estate and a winemaker who made very traditional styles. That is why the style of production here is so classical: the grapes spent up to 30-40 days on skins (using a submerged cap) in a large-format, wooden fermenter from Stockinger.
